The Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of the drugs Viagra (sildenafil citrate) and Levitra (vardenafil) in order to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men.
However, a new study suggests that the drug could lead to more serious side effects.
In an editorial in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, Dr. Nadeem Khan, of the University of Alberta and co-author of the study, said:
While the study was primarily designed to evaluate the effects of sildenafil and vardenafil, its results support earlier studies that have also shown that these drugs cause more serious side effects than the use of sildenafil or vardenafil, such as headaches, muscle pain, flushing and upset stomach. These side effects could be a result of the drug’s action on the blood vessel walls and the nerves.
The study is being conducted with the results of a clinical trial in men with ED.
